Our Independent Neighbours
Why Do Unionist Politicians NEVER Compare Scotland To Its Independent Neighbours?

Think about it. If the Union was really so much better than independence they would. Non-stop. After all. they’re always comparing public spending in Scotland with the UK average. They never shut up about this ‘Union dividend‘. Yet they never compare it to our independent neighbours?
If being a devolved part of the UK was even half as great as they’re always telling us, they’d be able to demonstrate it by actually showing us that we’re better off in comparison to the… Scotland-sized countries that surround us. Because that’s the whole debate right there – the Union model vs the independence model – which one works best?
When trying to effect a big change, like independence, it’s good to have strong evidence that it’s worth it. In 2014 the Yes campaign’s evidence fell short in the majority determination. However, the No vote hasn’t gone well. The years since have changed the choice dramatically. Gaining independence has become more & more important. Necessary even.
Or are we to just fall further & further behind our independent neighbours? Our people & systems struggling? Because (spoilers) that’s what’s happening if we stay.
Democracy
While Scotland gets the government it actually voted for 33% of the time its independent neighbours get it 100% of the time. They have better local democracy too. Scotland (with one authority bigger than Belgium) has 32 LA’s… Norway has 422.
Autonomy
Their elected governments have the normal powers of an independent country to develop their economy. To improve the lot of its people. And this they have done so much more effectively than distant Westminster has managed for Scotland.
Results
Every single one of our independent neighbours is richer, happier & healthier. Their public services are funded & work. Their national debt is much lower. This is why you never see Tories compare Scotland to its independent neighbours. They can’t.

“Best of Both Worlds”
‘The World’s most successful political union.’ ‘The broad shoulders of the UK’ etc
Better Together loved a bit of Goebbelsian repetition. These simplistic slogans helped cover the lack of depth to the case.
But the boasts are hollow. They don’t stand scrutiny. Independence supporters must present a truer picture of the Union. Logical comparisons should illuminate things.
Here we have a look at the fascinating and successful independent countries that surround us:
