Ian Smart. Vol.1

If we take fanatic to mean a beliefs caused loss of reason way above the normal level affecting behaviour, Ian Smart is a controversial Labour Party activist and anti-independence fanatic. The blogger was a respectable tv politics show guest commentator but lost his STV role as a result of an infamous tweet about ‘Poles and Pakis’. Despite the backlash he received, though, it’s clear the constitutional debate is still too triggering for Smart and he’s at it again, this time tweeting that SNP activists want English people repatriated.

We already know a Unionist has lost the argument and, more importantly, all self respect when they resort to linking wanting independence with Anglophobia. As Ian has many times.

Lawyer, Ian has a habit of pushing the cringe even further. As with all the worst Unionist trolls he also likes to call various parts of pro independence Scotland fascistic.

Because we’ve got good taste, we won’t bang on about how the *actual Fascists* who live here *now* – the famous holocaust denier, the SDL and the National Front – campaigned and voted in the indyref. And we’ll gloss over the support they received from British Nazi website The Daily Stormer, Britain First, the BNP, Tommy, Nick, Nigel etc etc).

As for 80 years ago and Donaldson, Smart’s historically illiterate on the subject if he doesn’t know Hitler had plenty of supporters in the Tory and Labour parties. People who were actually charged and convicted with something, unlike Donaldson who was under MI5 surveillance because there was no evidence.

Ian’s hero, Keir Hardie, the founder of the Labour Party said a fair few racist things and led a xenophobic campaign against Lithuanians in Scotland. Oswald Mosley was a Labour mp. Wonder if Smart thinks any of that is relevant to the discussion.

So Ian clearly likes divisively trolling half the country from the safety of his expensive house in an expensive area. Unlike the usual Unionist trolls, however, he’s not anonymous and he’s been suspended for it by his party in the past.

The two previous Scottish Labour leaders Jim Murphy and Kezia Dugdale suspended and warned Ian for previous online activity and yet he is still proving to be an embarrassment for new leader Richard Leonard. Will Leonard act more forcibly or is nothing too embarrassing for Scottish Labour?

Ian’s brother, Alan Smart, has strongly criticised his actions and suggested his motives were based around scaring immigrants into voting No, and he’s right. Ian is guilty of great prejudice and deceit for cynical goals. He’s a habitual liar and shitposter who will probably be back with enough nonsense for a Vol. 2.

  • Yes or No?

Unionist campaign group ‘These Islands’ has spent some of their £160k on more independence polling. They asked the official (Yes/No) question, the ‘Scotland in Union’ (Leave/Remain) question, and a whole load of supplementary and hypothetical questions on timing and what particular issues matter most to people in relation to independence. Let’s see what they learned and what they didn’t.
